Etsy Germany Street Team Sellers: Zurika

Name: Julie Galante
Location: Munich
Etsy Store: http://www.etsy.com/shop/zurika
Website: http://www.juliegalante.com
Blog: http://www.floggingthemuse.com/
Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/JulieGalanteArt
Twitter: http://twitter.com/julie_galante

Tell us a little bit about what you make.
I’m a painter specializing in portraits and cityscapes in oil and acrylic. These days much of my work has to do with my adopted hometown of Munich: scenes from daily life, Christmas markets, people in tracht, Oktoberfest, and so on. In addition to my larger works, I paint several small (30 x 30 cm or less) ‘daily paintings’ per week, and they cover a wide variety of subjects. It’s these small works that I’ll be offering in my Etsy store.

What are some goals for your Etsy store?
I’d like to find a wider audience of collectors for my work, both in Germany and internationally. It’s so much fun to be an artist in the internet age, where our work can be seen by potential buyers all over the world.

What item has been a ‘best-seller’ in your Etsy store?
My Etsy store is brand new, but from other online selling experiences I can say that my small dirndl study paintings are by far the most popular. Here’s an example.

How would you describe your style?
Colorful, expressionistic, and a bit irreverent.

Is this your full time work?
Not my Etsy shop specifically, but art is my full-time job.

Where do you do your work?
At my home studio in Munich.

How would you like to see Etsy develop in Germany?
I’d like Etsy to continue to bring a wider audience to Germany-based artists and crafters.

What do you see as some of the benefits/potential benefits of being part of the German Etsy Street Team?
I think it offers a great opportunity to connect with other interesting creative folks in Germany.

Debrief: Marketing Meet-up with Matt in München!

Matt joined about fifteen of us in Munich last week to share his thoughts on marketing. He riffed on topics as broad as creating a mission statement for your business and defining your brand to more tactical items like the importance of having a press page and using Google Analytics.

Afterward the group lingered a bit to chat and exchange information. I've started a marketing tips discussion thread on our Etsy Team page where we can list both what we heard at the meet-up and any other ideas to share with each other.

You can also see more pix of the event on our group Flickr pool here.

The next Hello Etsy sponsored meet-up in Munich will be on the evening of Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Glockenbach Werkstatt. I will be giving a 'sneak peak' presentation of the workshop I'll be giving on project management at the Hello Etsy conference in September. Stay tuned for a Facebook Event.

Vernissage mit Oraber!

One of our seriously talented team members, Sri Maryanto, also known as Oraber is participating in a Vernisage of seven different artists called 'DIVERSITÄTEN' which will take place tomorrow night in München. From their Facebook Event:

Debrief: Finding The Right Price Meet-Up

Last night 9 Munich Etsians had the first of (hopefully) many meet-ups where we gathered together to talk business! Using the Fragebogen put together by MissusD we had a fruitful and open discussion about pricing our work.

Some of our key takeaways:
  • When determining your hourly rate, you need to not only factor in your hourly rate but also your costs such as insurance, marketing time, space rental, and taxes (Gewerbe, Einkommen, Mehrwert, usw.)
  • Ignore what other people are charging on Etsy (or any other marketplace) and determine your price based on value and your costs

  • Factors such as methods of payment may impact what people are willing to pay. For example, if you are selling your products at a fair, and only accept cash people may not be as willing to pay for an item that costs over €100, whereas if you accept EC cards, people are not limited to the amount of cash they have in their wallets

  • We need to think about pricing on value, and educating customers not only about the costs of handmade, but the stories behind our products and the fact that many of our items are OOAK (one of a kind) or unique in ways that mass-produced items aren't. As one participant said: "People don't have to be rich to purchase something, they just have to fall in love with it"

  • Sometimes items can be priced to cheaply, and raising the price can actually increase sales. At least two of the group participants had this experience

It was very hard to separate the discussion from other aspects of being a small business, especially marketing. We realized we definitely need more meet-ups soon around topics such as blogging, Google, social media, time management, productivity and basic business best practices. A lot of these themes are being tackled at the Hello Etsy conference in September, but we'd like to get a jump on them ahead of time!

Questions for the 'Finding the Right Price' Meet-up

Tomorrow is the 'Finding the Right Price' Meet-up, in cooperation with Hello Etsy at the HEI in München. We thought it would be a good idea to share the questions we will be asking each other. Vielen Dank to Missus D and Matkirschphoto for developing and translating the questions!

We have a few spaces left for the meet-up/Wir haben noch platz! if interested, RSVP on the event Facebook Page!

Hello Etsy Event: Finding the Right Price

Questionaire

1. How are you currently pricing your work?
Apart from including the materials and labour costs, what other factors would you consider when you determine a price for your work?

*Here’s a simplified formula and a good place to start.*

Cost price (Labour and material cost) x 2 = Wholesale price

Wholesale price x 2 = Retail Price

Using the formula above, spend a few minutes re-calculating the price of one of your products. Are you in shock? You have not even added the 19% tax if you are registered for tax!

If the price seems high, you could be relating the price to your own disposable income, or comparing your work to mass produced goods.

2. Share with your group members who your target market is.
What is the disposable income of your target market?

Something to think about: You are not always your target market.

3. Sometimes, your target market and actual audience may be different.
Have you tried to figure out who your actual audience is?

Have you checked pricing for similar items in your niche/target market? On other marketplaces? Are your prices higher or lower?

Note: Another question to ask is have you performed surveys or interviewed people to find out the kind of people who are interested and understand your work?

Other questions you might want to discuss:
  • Have you experimented with raising or lowering your prices?
  • What are your biggest challenges regarding pricing?
  • Any lessons learned?

Finally,
If you have additional questions to ask, feel free to raise it!

Hello Etsy Event: Den richtigen Preis finden

Fragebogen

2. Erzähle deinen Gruppenmitgliedern, wer deine Zielgruppe ist. Was ist das verfügbare Einkommen deiner Zielgruppe?

Denk daran: Du bist nicht immer deine eigene Zielgruppe.

  • Was hast du bisher für Erfahrungen gemacht?

A Nice Convo

I recently got a convo in my Etsy box from a guy looking for stores in Munich that sell handmade, specifically Etsy handmade products. Below is my answer. I posted it on my Blog about Munich, and also thought I'd post it here, since it is highly relevant, and many of you may recognize yourselves :-)

------------------------------

Hello, Well you aren't bothering me at all, and as a matter of fact I do know of some shops in Munich that sell handmade goods, here a few that come to mind:

The Kreative in München Group
While this is not a shop per se, it is a group of very talented (mostly) Etsy sellers that put on craft fairs (often sponsored by Etsy) around the city relatively often. You can click on their website above or join
their Facebook page to keep up to date with their latest sales.

Hands Gallery
This shop is run by a member of the Etsy Germany Team and just recently opened in Haidhausen and sells products from a variety of talented local makers.

Vier Werkstatten - Muenchen.de listing (in German)
This is a wonderful store on Frauenhoferstr. While not every single item in the store is handmade, most of the work is from talented local artisans including a paper lamp designer and ceramicist. There are also lots of handmade clothing items.

1260 Grad
This is a gorgeous pottery studio, also in Haidhausen. It is run by Petra Fischer, a very talented ceramicist. Most days she is in the store herself, and it's nice to go in and just admire the artful way she displays all her items.
I wrote a little post about the store on my blog Wahlmüncherin (with pictures) I'm sure there are many more and I am slowly discovering new ones, but I hope this is enough to get you started!

Cheers, Eleanor

EGST Munich Meet-Up: The Right Price

Mai ein Meet-up statt.

--------

Do you struggle to figure out how to best price your products? Do you sometimes think that lowering your prices is the only or best way to sell more products? Have you already experimented with raising your prices?

This is one of the trickiest parts of having a small or indie-business. In order to support each other and share our collective experience, ideas, tips and know-how we've scheduled a meet-up in Munich on Monday, May 2. The meet-up is in cooperation with Hello Etsy, but we'll be running it ourselves, breaking up into small groups to share our findings and report them back to the group.

The meeting is at HEI, Worthstraße 42 in the upstairs room from 19:00-22:00. We have spots for 16 participants. If you'd like to participate please accept on our Facebook Event Page or leave a comment here indicating that you'd like to come.

Verkaufen auf Deutsch - Why I opened an Etsy Store in German

Last month I started an experiment. I opened a second shop in Etsy that is entirely in German. Why did I do this, when Etsy isn't translated in German yet? For a couple of reasons:

1. Why Not? With the exception of the listing fees it's basically free. I wanted to see what it was like to maintain two stores, and what the experience is like listing products in another language and currency.

2. Google rankings. Even if people aren't searching for products on Etsy in German, I'm assuming Google is. My guess is that Google indexes Etsy on a much more regular basis than my own www.empapers.eu/de site.

2. Etsy will be in German one of these days. I want to have my German-language shop ready to go when that day comes. The chances are good that when Etsy finally does launch in other languages, they will do a lot of heavy promoting and be looking for shops to highlight. I want to be able to piggyback onto whatever publicity and promotion they will already be doing.

3. I want to sell in two currencies. Most of my customers are in North America and the English speaking world. I think a lot of these folks may be a little 'scared' of Euros, and likewise Europeans would rather not pay in dollars. This way I can offer all customers a shopping option in a currency they are familiar with.

Creating the second store was easy. My biggest challenge is that my written German is not good enough to write my own product copy, so I worked with a German Texter to translate a lot of my product text. Once you have the basic text for a listing, if you have similar products it's pretty easy to write a little intro text that is specific to the individual product and then just use the new 'copy' feature on a listing to create additional listings with different pictures.

So far nothing much has happened, and I haven't had any sales. My guess is that it's because there aren't many German speakers shopping (or searching for German terms) on Etsy, and I don't log into the second store as much as I should. Now that there are so many more social shopping features on Etsy (circles, favorite feeds, etc.) the more active on Etsy you are, the more awareness of your products and store increases.

While I can't point to large sales, I still think it's a good idea, and something that Native speakers can easily do, even if it's just with a few products to start.

You can follow a thread on this topic (Auf Deutsch) in the Etsy Deutsche Community Team Forum

Badeschuhe Verbesserung!

Here is a short and fun Tutorial on how to take a pair of shower shoes from 'blah' to 'WOW'. Thanks to team member Leocardia for the helpful instructions!

You need boring plastic shoes and flowers of thin synthetic fabric.

And elastic thread, an adequate needle, beads and a perforating tool.

Now you perforate the upper part of your shoe as many times, as you need to add your flowers (I made seven holes).

You attach the flowers with the elastic thread and a bead through the holes from within.
In the end you have unique shoes with a sea of flowers...

EGST Munich Meet-Up

What a shot in the arm! About 23 Etsians in Munich met-up for catching up and swapping ideas about Etsy in Germany and Munich. We met at Hey Luigi at 7:00 p.m. and stayed till just about midnight. It was a really great chance to catch up and get some face-to-face time with other Etsy sellers in Munich.

There were new faces and old. The hot topics we discussed were, the upcoming Etsy Lab in Munich (March 21st - stay tuned!) The Hello Etsy Conference in Berlin, the themes - especially Small Business and the possibility of attending, were of real interest to everyone. We also discussed potential fairs we could participate in, and begun conversations around where we could meet more regularly as well as hold monthly 'mini-fairs'. Cards were exchanged, connections were made and information was shared.

We look forward to meeting up more, and encourage more meet ups in other cities. For now enjoy this treasury.

Special thanks to Leocardia for German translation and Hazelshark for the great pictures!

Etsy Germany Steet Team Sellers: Leocardia

Name: Ulrike Wenzel
Wohn- und Arbeitsort:
München
Etsy Store:
www.etsy.com/shop/Leocardia
Blog:
http://www.leocardia.blogspot.com/

Erzähl' uns ein bisschen von dir. Was machst und verkaufst du?

-----------------------------------------------------

Tell us a little bit about what you make.
For my Etsy-shop "Leocardia" I make f. e. pencil holders, shaped like crocodiles, brooches which look like starfish and dragonflies (yet to be listed), monotype prints of Bavarian pretzels and other tiny things which interest me.

How would you describe your style?
I love to make things which appeal to me from felt, beads, fabric, paper and many more materials and I want other people to share.
To invent gifts for friends was a first step to my Etsy-shop. I "re-used" some of these ideas for my shop.

What item has been a ‘best-seller’ in your Etsy store ?
My crocodile pencil holder is featured in many treasuries. It is not low priced, for it takes time to cut the felt, apply all the buttons and the zipper and sew all parts together by hand.
I got a request from the USA to produce literally hundreds of them for ten dollars each- a price that would hardly cover the cost of the sheer material...So I said no and therefore I´m still waiting for Crokie to become my bestseller...

Where do you do your work?
In a corner of our living room I own a big table, a fabric cabinet (which exists as a wee duplicate in my Etsy-shop!) and a lot of boards and drawers, that contain needles, beads and pencils.

Is this your full time work? What are some goals for your Etsy store?
I´m working as a graphic designer for a tv-station to earn my living and I would love to see my Etsy-shop grow eventually. I persuaded my husband, who is a graphic designer as well, to open an Etsy-shop of his own in a few days

How would you like to see Etsy develop in Germany? As I like Etsy very much I´d be happy to see it grow in Germany. Shipping to other countries or even continents is so expensive, that I´m afraid people often refrain from buying beautiful items from Germany.

What do you see as some of the benefits/potential benefits of being part of the German Etsy Street Team?
I like being part of the Etsy Germany Street Team because there is always someone I can ask when in doubt about anything and it´s nice to cooperate and meet new people who share my interests.
