Debrief: Marketing Meet-up with Matt in München!

Matt joined about fifteen of us in Munich last week to share his thoughts on marketing. He riffed on topics as broad as creating a mission statement for your business and defining your brand to more tactical items like the importance of having a press page and using Google Analytics.

Afterward the group lingered a bit to chat and exchange information. I've started a marketing tips discussion thread on our Etsy Team page where we can list both what we heard at the meet-up and any other ideas to share with each other.

You can also see more pix of the event on our group Flickr pool here.

The next Hello Etsy sponsored meet-up in Munich will be on the evening of Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Glockenbach Werkstatt. I will be giving a 'sneak peak' presentation of the workshop I'll be giving on project management at the Hello Etsy conference in September. Stay tuned for a Facebook Event.

Debrief: Finding The Right Price Meet-Up

Last night 9 Munich Etsians had the first of (hopefully) many meet-ups where we gathered together to talk business! Using the Fragebogen put together by MissusD we had a fruitful and open discussion about pricing our work.

Some of our key takeaways:
  • When determining your hourly rate, you need to not only factor in your hourly rate but also your costs such as insurance, marketing time, space rental, and taxes (Gewerbe, Einkommen, Mehrwert, usw.)
  • Ignore what other people are charging on Etsy (or any other marketplace) and determine your price based on value and your costs

  • Factors such as methods of payment may impact what people are willing to pay. For example, if you are selling your products at a fair, and only accept cash people may not be as willing to pay for an item that costs over €100, whereas if you accept EC cards, people are not limited to the amount of cash they have in their wallets

  • We need to think about pricing on value, and educating customers not only about the costs of handmade, but the stories behind our products and the fact that many of our items are OOAK (one of a kind) or unique in ways that mass-produced items aren't. As one participant said: "People don't have to be rich to purchase something, they just have to fall in love with it"

  • Sometimes items can be priced to cheaply, and raising the price can actually increase sales. At least two of the group participants had this experience

It was very hard to separate the discussion from other aspects of being a small business, especially marketing. We realized we definitely need more meet-ups soon around topics such as blogging, Google, social media, time management, productivity and basic business best practices. A lot of these themes are being tackled at the Hello Etsy conference in September, but we'd like to get a jump on them ahead of time!

A Nice Convo

I recently got a convo in my Etsy box from a guy looking for stores in Munich that sell handmade, specifically Etsy handmade products. Below is my answer. I posted it on my Blog about Munich, and also thought I'd post it here, since it is highly relevant, and many of you may recognize yourselves :-)

------------------------------

Hello, Well you aren't bothering me at all, and as a matter of fact I do know of some shops in Munich that sell handmade goods, here a few that come to mind:

The Kreative in München Group
While this is not a shop per se, it is a group of very talented (mostly) Etsy sellers that put on craft fairs (often sponsored by Etsy) around the city relatively often. You can click on their website above or join
their Facebook page to keep up to date with their latest sales.

Hands Gallery
This shop is run by a member of the Etsy Germany Team and just recently opened in Haidhausen and sells products from a variety of talented local makers.

Vier Werkstatten - Muenchen.de listing (in German)
This is a wonderful store on Frauenhoferstr. While not every single item in the store is handmade, most of the work is from talented local artisans including a paper lamp designer and ceramicist. There are also lots of handmade clothing items.

1260 Grad
This is a gorgeous pottery studio, also in Haidhausen. It is run by Petra Fischer, a very talented ceramicist. Most days she is in the store herself, and it's nice to go in and just admire the artful way she displays all her items.
I wrote a little post about the store on my blog Wahlmüncherin (with pictures) I'm sure there are many more and I am slowly discovering new ones, but I hope this is enough to get you started!

Cheers, Eleanor

EGST Munich Meet-Up: The Right Price

Mai ein Meet-up statt.

--------

Do you struggle to figure out how to best price your products? Do you sometimes think that lowering your prices is the only or best way to sell more products? Have you already experimented with raising your prices?

This is one of the trickiest parts of having a small or indie-business. In order to support each other and share our collective experience, ideas, tips and know-how we've scheduled a meet-up in Munich on Monday, May 2. The meet-up is in cooperation with Hello Etsy, but we'll be running it ourselves, breaking up into small groups to share our findings and report them back to the group.

The meeting is at HEI, Worthstraße 42 in the upstairs room from 19:00-22:00. We have spots for 16 participants. If you'd like to participate please accept on our Facebook Event Page or leave a comment here indicating that you'd like to come.
