Badeschuhe Verbesserung!

Here is a short and fun Tutorial on how to take a pair of shower shoes from 'blah' to 'WOW'. Thanks to team member Leocardia for the helpful instructions!

Man braucht langweilige Badeschuhe und Blüten aus dünnem Synthetikstoff.
You need boring plastic shoes and flowers of thin synthetic fabric.

Außerdem Gummifaden, eine passende Nähnadel, Perlen und eine Zange zum Stanzen.
And elastic thread, an adequate needle, beads and a perforating tool.

Jetzt kann man Löcher an den Stellen stanzen, wo man eine Blüte hinsetzen möchte (ich habe sieben Löcher pro Schuh gemacht).
Now you perforate the upper part of your shoe as many times, as you need to add your flowers (I made seven holes).

Dann werden durch die Löcher die einzelnen Blüten mit dem Gummifaden und jeweils einer Perle befestigt.
You attach the flowers with the elastic thread and a bead through the holes from within.
Das Resultat sind unverwechselbare Badeschuhe, die an Deinen Füßen zu einem wandelnden Blütenmeer werden...
In the end you have unique shoes with a sea of flowers...

Using Etsy and Craft Cult for 'JIT' Delivery

I had a big epiphany about ten days ago. I've been loving my 'wedding invitation a day' experiment, and am delightfully surprised at how I'm almost mid-way through and haven't had a creativity block yet. Granted, some designs have been better than others, but I've been able to produce something each and every day.

One of the frustrations of running my e.m.papers enterprise is not knowing what people are going to like and what they aren't. The truth is, a huge majority of my sales come from just one design, my Garden Party wedding invitation design. That's nice, consdering I based it on the wedding invitations I designed for my own wedding, but a girl can not live off revenues generated from one invitation alone. So doing a design a day is a good way to get more designs out there to test. But, out 'where'? That's when I realized that Etsy is a perfect platform for testing new products.

Often, when I come up with a new design, I think 'Awesome, this is great and it's going to be a huge hit' sometimes I'm right, sometimes, I'm not. I realized the best way to find out for sure is just to upload it to my Etsy store and use craftcult to see which designs are getting the most love. I'm finding out that I just can't predict from gut feeling what's going to be popular. Now, this isn't a perfect science, I have to make sure that I'm not biased in what I'm relisting, but still, the view-to hearts ratio feature on Craft Cult helps to adjust for that. Besides, some things, like actual sales speak louder than all the hearts in the world.

I'm really excited about this 'discovery' because it means I can get designs in front of customers faster, and develop the products they like and not spend too much, if any effort on invitation sets that people just aren't going to buy. This is my mini-version of 'JIT' Just in Time delivery, common in manufacturing, which basically means not keeping a lot of inventory hanging around. If someone orders the design, I can build the template after the order is placed, rather than doing it up front and hoping that someone will purchase it later. I just wish I thought of this sooner!

Obviously this doesn't work for every product type, but for those that involve a lot of production, you can still make a prototype, list it and see how it does rather than spend a lot of labor and time producing a bunch in anticipation of sales that may never materialize.

Tutorial: Turning Gutter Outlets into Busts

Ich liebe Baumärkte! Sie sind die wahren Designtempel. Ich habe lange mit verschiedenen Materialien versucht, Büsten für die Präsentation meiner Choker zu basteln. Aber ich war mit allem unzufrieden. Dann ging ich in den Baumarkt.

I do love hardware stores! If you're looking for true design, go there. Me, I was tinkering with all sorts of materials to create a cool presentation for my chokers. But it didn't result in anything useful. And then I went to the hardware store.


Du stellst Schmuck her und suchst eine originelle und preisgünstige Büste für Deinen Verkauf? Oder hast Du einfach tonnenweise Halsketten, aber keinen Schmuckständer? Dann geh' in die Regenrinnen - Abteilung Deines Baumarktes und frag' nach „Regenrinneneinhangstutzen“! Auf dem Weg zur Kasse nimm noch Sprühlack in Deiner Lieblingsfarbe mit. Bring alles in Deinen – gut belüfteten - Bastelkeller. Oder besser richte Dir einen Arbeitstisch auf dem Balkon/ im Garten ein.

Are you a jewelry designer looking for an original and yet low-priced bust? Or have you simply got tons of necklaces, but no rack? Then visit your next hardware store and ask for a running outlet in the rain drain department. Heading for the cashpoint get some spray paint in your favourite colour. Bring everything back to your – well vented – studio or rather install some work place on the balcony/ in the garden.

Material

• Regenrinneneinhangstutzen und Sprühlack. Man braucht etwa eine kleine Dose für eine Büste.


• Zum großflächigen Abdecken der Arbeitsumgebung: Plastiktüten sind besser als alte Zeitungen. Diese kleben nämlich an frisch Gesprühtem fest.


• Schleifpapier, weicher Lappen.


• Falls Muster gewünscht sind: flexible, nicht zu dicke Pappe, Schere und einige grosse Büroklammern.


• Ein großer Bogen weißes Papier.
  


• Atemschutz für Nase und Mund.
  

• Running outlets and spray paint. It takes about one can per bust.


• For covering a large area of the workspace use plastic bags rather than old newspapers. Paper tends to jam with fresh paint.


• Sandpaper, some soft cloth.


• If you like to decorate the bust with some pattern, you'll need flexible and not too thick cardboard, scissors plus some paper clips.


• A big piece of white paper.


• Breathing protection

Vorbereitung/ Preparation

Der Stutzen muss vor dem Ansprühen von Staub und Fett gereinigt werden. Es reicht, wenn man ihn mit heißem Wasser abspült. Ich empfehle, den Stutzen vorher anzuschleifen. Dann hält der Lack später besser. Schleifstaub mit einem weichen Lappen abwischen. Sprühlack hat eine erstaunliche Reichweite. Deshalb die Arbeitsumgebung großflächig abdecken. Pro Büste sprüht man etwa eine halbe Stunde. Setz' einen Atemschutz auf, ist besser. Wirklich.

The running outlet must be free from dust and grease before spraypaninting. Just wash it with hot water. I recommend grinding before painting. It makes the paint more durable later on. Remove grinding dust with a soft cloth. Spraypaint can make a remarkable mess. So you might want to cover a large area of your workspace. You'll be working about half an hour on each bust. So use a breath protection. Really!

Generell/ In General

Es müssen mindestens zwei Schichten gesprüht werden, um eine gut deckende Lackierung zu erreichen. Trockenzeiten variieren je nach Lackart und sind auf der Dose angegeben.

To top-dress the material it takes at least two coatings. Check out the recommended drying time written on the can. It may vary depending on the spraypaint you are using.

Schritt 1/ Step 1

Zuerst den Stutzen von innen lackieren. Er muss dazu gelegt und gekippt werden. Wenn man ihn zuerst außen ansprüht, nimmt der Lack bei diesem Schritt schon Schaden. Also: innen beginnen. Die Flächen, auf denen die Büste später steht, nicht vergessen! Trocknen lassen, dann eine zweite Schicht, evtl. noch eine dritte sprühen.

First work the inside of the running outlet. For doing this you have to put it down and tilt it over. If the outer surface was already painted you would damage the paint. So start with the inner surface. And don't forget to spray the base, too! Let dry and then add another coating or maybe two.

Schritt 2/ Step 2

Stutzen aufstellen und rundherum außen ansprühen. Besonders auf Falten und Rillen achten. Laufende Farbe nicht abwischen! Trocknen lassen und mit einem Schleifpapier abnehmen. Dann die zweite, evtl. dritte Schicht auftragen. Vielleicht gefällt Dir die Büste schon, wie sie ist. Dann bist Du fertig! Wenn Du allerdings noch etwas Verzierung möchtest, dann weiter mit...

Now place the running outlet on it's base again. Take special care of creases and rills. Do not wipe off running paint. Let it dry and remove it by grinding. Then add another coating or maybe two. Maybe you are already satisfied with the bust the way it is. Then you're done now. But if you wish to add some decorating elements, continue with...

Schritt 3/ Step 3



Wenn die Büste Dekolleté, oder ein Muster haben soll, dann kommt jetzt die flexible, nicht zu dicke Pappe zum Einsatz. Schneide daraus eine Schablone nach Deinen Vorstellungen zu. Hänge den grossen Bogen Papier an eine Wand und teste die Wirkung der Schablone, die optimale Sprühdistanz und -stärke. Falls nötig kannst Du die Schablone ggf. noch verbessern. Wenn Du zufrieden bist mit dem Ergebnis, dann befestige die Schablone mit großen Büroklammern an der Büste. Sollte Dir ein Fehler passieren, kannst Du mit dem Grundierlack reparieren, indem Du mit etwas Abstand vorsichtig darüber sprühst. Gratuliere! Nun bist Du definitiv fertig!

Do you want your bust to show some decollete or a certain pattern? Than it's time to use the flexible and not too thick cardboard for making a stencil. Put the big piece of white paper up against a wall und do some test spraying. Check out the stencils effect and the best spraying distance and intensity. If necessary you can optimize your stencil. Once you are satisfied with the result mount the stencil onto the bust using paper clips. If you happen to make a mistake you can still correct it with the basic paint. But be careful and spray lightly from a larger distance. Congratulations! Now you are definetily done.

Tipp/ Hint

Bewahre übrigen Lack auf jeden Fall für spätere Reparaturen auf. Die Farbe kann z. B. beim Transportieren Macken bekommen. Um dies möglichst zu verhindern, schlage die Büsten am besten in weichen Stoff ein.

Save left over paint for later corrections. The painting might get damaged due to transportationt. To prevent this always wrap some cloth around the bust.

Was sonst noch geht/ Anything goes, well almost

Die Büste eignet sich natürlich nicht nur für die Präsentation von Chokern, sondern auch für Halsketten. Viele verschieden Arten von Ketten lassen sich sehr schön drapieren, obwohl diese Büste keine Schultern hat, wie das sonst bei Schmuckbüsten üblich ist.

Of course not only chokers can be arranged on this bust, it is also suitable for the presentation of necklaces. Though this bust has no shoulders as they usually have it's possible to drape various kinds of necklaces.
