Guasacaca Venezolana

Some weeks ago, we had these chicken breast filets, and as my husband brought some Baguettes on his way home back from work, I thought to add some veggies to the dish. And what can be better, with grilled meat or chicken, than our delicious Venezuelan Guasacaca!

Guasacaca is our version of the world famous mexican Guacamole. But it has many variations according to where it is made in Venezuela. In any case its main ingredient is Avocado. Some people (and as the wikipedia article says) makes it more like a sauce, almost liquid or as a cream. But I like it more as a "Picadillo", that means all the ingredients very tiny sliced in mini squares.

Well no more explanations, here is the recipe !

Ingredients: (4 portions) / Zutaten (4 Portionen)

  • 1/2 Avocado (big) - not too mature (soft) not too hard (sometimes I can find real avocado stones at the supermarket!)
  • 1/4 Onion / 1/4 Zwiebel
  • 1 Tomato (big) / 1 Tomate (groß)
  • 1/4 Green Paprika / 1/4 grüne Paprika
  • 1/4 Red Paprika / 1/4 rote Paprika
  • 1 handful Parsley / 1 handvoll Petersilie
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil / 1 EL Olivenöl
  • 1/2 tbsp White Vinegar / 1/2 EL Essig
  • 1/2 tbsp grounded red Chili / 1/2 EL gemahlenes Chili
  • Salt, Pepper and Garlic to your like. / Salz, Pfeffer, Knoblauch nach Geschmack

Preparation / Vorbereitung:

Cut all the vegetables very small, as small as you can, but DON'T use the mixer, or the kitchen helper, unless it really cuts the vegetables without making them a juice. The idea is to have all the vegetables present but well mixed.

To remove the skin of the Avocado, use a very sharp knife and cut the half of the avocado on its longer side. Remember the Avocado has a big seed in the middle, use it as a guide to go all around it. Once the Avocado is in 2 halves, use a table spoon to carefully separate the skin from the "meat" of the fruit (yep, it is a fruit). Begin with the "belly" or bigger side, and go all around, as shown in the photo.

For the Avocado I want to stress that it needs special handling if it is soft, because it can convert into a paste in your hands. If your Avocado is soft I recommend you to cut it in halves, put one half in a bowl and make a paste with a fork. It is easy and fast, add some salt and mix. The other half, with a very sharp knife, slice and cut it as small as you can.

Add Avocado to the tomato, paprika, onion and parsley and mix carefuly. Season the mix with salt, pepper, garlic and chili. Add the olive oil and the vinegar and mix again carefully not to smash the avocado too much.

Serve cold, to accompany all kind of grilled meats, chicken, turkey, fish. Also goes very well and tasty with baked potato, or mixed with white rice.

Enjoy ! / Guten Appetit!

Verkaufen auf Deutsch - Why I opened an Etsy Store in German

Last month I started an experiment. I opened a second shop in Etsy that is entirely in German. Why did I do this, when Etsy isn't translated in German yet? For a couple of reasons:

1. Why Not? With the exception of the listing fees it's basically free. I wanted to see what it was like to maintain two stores, and what the experience is like listing products in another language and currency.

2. Google rankings. Even if people aren't searching for products on Etsy in German, I'm assuming Google is. My guess is that Google indexes Etsy on a much more regular basis than my own www.empapers.eu/de site.

2. Etsy will be in German one of these days. I want to have my German-language shop ready to go when that day comes. The chances are good that when Etsy finally does launch in other languages, they will do a lot of heavy promoting and be looking for shops to highlight. I want to be able to piggyback onto whatever publicity and promotion they will already be doing.

3. I want to sell in two currencies. Most of my customers are in North America and the English speaking world. I think a lot of these folks may be a little 'scared' of Euros, and likewise Europeans would rather not pay in dollars. This way I can offer all customers a shopping option in a currency they are familiar with.

Creating the second store was easy. My biggest challenge is that my written German is not good enough to write my own product copy, so I worked with a German Texter to translate a lot of my product text. Once you have the basic text for a listing, if you have similar products it's pretty easy to write a little intro text that is specific to the individual product and then just use the new 'copy' feature on a listing to create additional listings with different pictures.

So far nothing much has happened, and I haven't had any sales. My guess is that it's because there aren't many German speakers shopping (or searching for German terms) on Etsy, and I don't log into the second store as much as I should. Now that there are so many more social shopping features on Etsy (circles, favorite feeds, etc.) the more active on Etsy you are, the more awareness of your products and store increases.

While I can't point to large sales, I still think it's a good idea, and something that Native speakers can easily do, even if it's just with a few products to start.

Badeschuhe Verbesserung!

Here is a short and fun Tutorial on how to take a pair of shower shoes from 'blah' to 'WOW'. Thanks to team member Leocardia for the helpful instructions!

You need boring plastic shoes and flowers of thin synthetic fabric.

And elastic thread, an adequate needle, beads and a perforating tool.

Now you perforate the upper part of your shoe as many times, as you need to add your flowers (I made seven holes).

You attach the flowers with the elastic thread and a bead through the holes from within.
In the end you have unique shoes with a sea of flowers...

Etsy Germany Street Team Sellers: Happy Serendipity

Wohn- und Arbeitsort: Frankfurt am Main
Etsy Store: happyserendipity
Blog: https://www.happyserendipity.com
Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Happy-Serendipity/496430320351?ref=sgm
Twitter: @myserendipities

Erzähl' uns ein bisschen von dir. Was machst und verkaufst du?

Wie würdest du deinen Stil beschreiben?
Quirlig, modern, bisschen old-school.

Jogurt-Vanillepudding

Let's start with a simple math calculation: I love yogurt + my favorite dessert is vanilla pudding = Yogurt Vanilla Pudding!

As incredible as it seems, I came up with this mix just some weeks ago, when I made the Birthday cake of my son, which I decided to be Lemon Cream Cake. I made the cream with a mix of vanilla pudding, yogurt and Quark plus lemon juice. Was delicious!!

So I thought to make the same, but without Quark and lemon, just plain Yogurt and Vanilla Pudding. The result is as well delicious! Though a bit less consistent as Quark adds stability to the mix. If you want it even harder, add transparent Gelatin and let it cool for at least 6 hours. I added one half Peach cut in 3 as decoration. Add any fruit you want!

And of course, as my goal for this year is to cook more nutritious and healthy food, avoiding as much as I can the fatty and artificial foods, when its about desserts, what is best than yogurt? And even better a soft delicious yogurt vanilla pudding? njaaammmm! Yogurt is tooooo beneficial for our health, buy as much as you can and start making your salad dressings with yogurt, make pudding with yogurt, make your cakes with yogurt, make your drinks with yogurt. Or just add some spoons of yogurt in a bowl, some berries and a bit of honey and oat flakes, there you have a delicious breakfast or snack and even a dessert! Enjoy!!!

Guten Appetit!

Ingredients / Zutaten:

(Easy way with commercial vanilla pudding without sugar // Einfacher weg mit Puddingpulver ohne Zucker)

  • 1 package of Vanilla Pudding (without sugar) for 500 ml Milk // 1 Packung Vanillepuddingpulver ohne Zucker für 500 ml Milch
  • 400 ml Milk // Milch
  • 1 Tbsp Corn Starch // 1 EL Maizena
  • 2 - 3 Tbsp Sugar (I added 2, more than enough!)
  • 1 tsp Bourbon Vanilla extract // 1 TL Bourbon Vanilleextrakt
  • 6 - 8 Tbsp Full of Plain Yogurt (no sugar, no flavor) // 6 - 8 EL Naturjogurt
  • Peach or any other fruit to decorate // Pfirsich oder anderes Obst zum dekorieren

Preparation:

Mix the extra spoon of Corn Starch with the Vanilla Pudding powder mix and the Bourbon Vanilla extract. Reserve half a glass of the 400 ml Milk. Add the Vanilla pudding powder and corn starch to the reserved milk in a glass and mix well until dissolved.

Pour the rest of the milk in a sauce pan. Heat until begins to boil. Quickly, as soon as begins to boil, add the dissolved mix of pudding, corn starch and vanilla extract and mix quickly until you obtain a homogeneous mix. Notice it will get hard quickly as it contains less milk and more corn starch. Remove from the heat and pour in a bowl.

Add the yogurt and mix well. Here you have to vigorously mix everything to avoid crumbs. If you still obtain crumbs (mine are there because of taking photos), you can use your hand mixer or stab mixer to mix it thoroughly and make it smooth. Add to individual bowls and decorate with your fruit.

You can refrigerate it for later and better consistency or you can devour it right away. :)

You're done!

Fertig!

Using Etsy and Craft Cult for 'JIT' Delivery

I had a big epiphany about ten days ago. I've been loving my 'wedding invitation a day' experiment, and am delightfully surprised at how I'm almost mid-way through and haven't had a creativity block yet. Granted, some designs have been better than others, but I've been able to produce something each and every day.

One of the frustrations of running my e.m.papers enterprise is not knowing what people are going to like and what they aren't. The truth is, a huge majority of my sales come from just one design, my Garden Party wedding invitation design. That's nice, consdering I based it on the wedding invitations I designed for my own wedding, but a girl can not live off revenues generated from one invitation alone. So doing a design a day is a good way to get more designs out there to test. But, out 'where'? That's when I realized that Etsy is a perfect platform for testing new products.

Often, when I come up with a new design, I think 'Awesome, this is great and it's going to be a huge hit' sometimes I'm right, sometimes, I'm not. I realized the best way to find out for sure is just to upload it to my Etsy store and use craftcult to see which designs are getting the most love. I'm finding out that I just can't predict from gut feeling what's going to be popular. Now, this isn't a perfect science, I have to make sure that I'm not biased in what I'm relisting, but still, the view-to hearts ratio feature on Craft Cult helps to adjust for that. Besides, some things, like actual sales speak louder than all the hearts in the world.

I'm really excited about this 'discovery' because it means I can get designs in front of customers faster, and develop the products they like and not spend too much, if any effort on invitation sets that people just aren't going to buy. This is my mini-version of 'JIT' Just in Time delivery, common in manufacturing, which basically means not keeping a lot of inventory hanging around. If someone orders the design, I can build the template after the order is placed, rather than doing it up front and hoping that someone will purchase it later. I just wish I thought of this sooner!

Obviously this doesn't work for every product type, but for those that involve a lot of production, you can still make a prototype, list it and see how it does rather than spend a lot of labor and time producing a bunch in anticipation of sales that may never materialize.

Handmade in Germany = Einzigartige deutsche Handarbeit

Spinach Quiche

Last week, when we went to buy veggies and groceries, I had 2 beautiful and bursting dark green broccoli bunches in my hands. Then came my hubby and said: remember your son is tired of broccoli, can we change? I almost cried! Haha! So well I moved on from greens for this week, and got some nice spinach leaves! (sadly frozen because I can't find them fresh in this time of the year).

Some days later, I came up with the idea of using the last frozen pieces from a huge pumpkin I got last autumn, so I decided to combine them with the spinach and then the lightbulb turned on! It was an "Aha!" moment. So I came up with this delicious, easy and relatively quick to make Quiche recipe that I'm sharing with you now.

As always, feel free to make your own changes, I always come up with ideas of mixing veggies. Dare to mix your own! and enjoy!!!

Macht Euren eigenen Mix! Und guten Appetit!

Ingredients / Zutaten:

For the pastry / Für den Teig:

  • 200 gr / 2 cups All purpose wheat flour // Mehl
  • 100 gr / 1/2 cup Cold Butter or Margarine // Kalte Margarine oder Butter
  • 1 egg // Ei
  • 20 ml / 2 Tbsp water // Wasser
  • Pinch of salt // Eine Prise Salz
For the filling / Für die Füllung:
  • 200 gr / 8 oz Pumpkin (diced and previously cooked in boiling water for around 10 minutes) // Kürbis (gewürfelt und für 10 minuten in Wasser gekocht)
  • 200 gr / 8 oz Spinach leaves (frozen or fresh) // Spinatblätter (gefroren oder frisch)
  • 3 eggs // Eier
  • 1 leek diced // Porree-Würfel
  • 1 cup sweet corn // Mais
  • 1 cup diced red paprika // Rote Paprika-Würfel
  • 1 Tbsp ginger powder // Ingwerpulver
  • 2 Tbsp herbs of the season (try italian or mediterranean mix: parsley, basil, majoram, rosemary) // Kräuter der Saison (z.B. Italienische oder mediterrane Mischung: Petersilie, Basilikum, Majoran, Rosmarin)
  • Salt, pepper, garlic for seasoning // Salz, Pfeffer, Knoblauch
  • 1/2 cup of cheese for Gratin // Gratinkäse

Preparation / Zubereitung:

Pre-heat your oven at 200 °C /392 °F. Start with the pastry.

Den Ofen auf 200°C vorheizen. Mit dem Teig anfangen.

In a bowl, add the salt to the flour and mix well. Then add the cold butter or margarine and with a knife or a pastry spatula divide or cut the butter in smaller pieces at the same time as mixing with the flour. When the butter or margarine is distributed in smaller pieces add the egg and continue mixing while "cutting" with your spatula.

Then begin to knead with your hands until forming a soft dough. Transfer the dough to your working table previously spreading some more flour in the surface to avoid sticking too much. Continue kneading until you get a soft textured dough. Cut 1/4 or a bit less of the dough and reserve.

With your rolling pin to make the big ball flat until you get a thin layer big enough to cover your baking plate (better if you have a pie form, but a normal cake or lasagna plate can also work). Try to keep the layer thin, no more than 5 mm (3/16").

Cover your plate, making sure you're covering all the sides as well. Don't leave open spaces or bubbles. Trim the excess off the borders and reserve. Pinch with a fork evenly through all the surface of your covered baking plate.

Bake for around 15-20 minutes (check until the borders begin to get a darker yellow color, do not over-do because it can get burnt in the second baking period).

While the pastry is the oven, mix your previously cooked pumpkin, the spinach, eggs, leek, ginger and seasoning. Use your blender, food processor, or stab-mixer. Once you get an homogeneous mix, add the corn and the diced paprika and mix with a spoon or spatula.

When the pastry is baked, fill with the mix you just made and decorate with the cheese for Gratin and thin stripes made with the reserved pastry dough.

Bake for around 25-30 minutes (time varies in every oven) at 200°C/392 °F, until the borders and the pastry stripes begin to get that yummy golden color.

When done, move out of the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Cut, serve and enjoy!

PS: my hubby and my sun are not close friends of spinach. This time they loved it!

What My New Hausschuhe Taught Me About Etsy Favorites

Whenever I need something new, I try to think to remember to buy it from Etsy as often as is possible. So when I recently logged onto my store and saw these lovelies posted in the new 'Your Favorites' feed, I was delighted. I had been needing new slippers, and there were the cute red and white numbers from The Crocodile Rock, a Sarajevo-based Etsy seller, that I had favorited just asking be purchased.

These new Hausschuhe arrived a few weeks ago, and I just love them. But this purchase got me to thinking about more than just keeping my feet warm. I realized that some of the new social shopping features on Etsy have some big implications, especially when it comes to favorites.

Getting items marked 'favorite' is now more important - Typically I mark all kinds of items 'favorites' and then promptly forget about them. I never went into my 'favorites' tab and browsed, but now I'm routinely reminded of things I like when I log in to Etsy. This keeps items in my mind longer, and also encourages me to do a little more browsing rather than just quickly taking care of Etsy business (relisting, convos, etc.)

Treasuries are now better for promoting - Forget about getting on the Etsy front page. Maybe your treasury will, maybe it won't. The point is more eyeballs will land on your listings, with the potential for more of your items to be favorited, which means...

Potential Customers will see your items more often - As a result of all these new feeds, people will see your items more. I once read that someone needs to see a brand or product seven times to actually purchase it. Having an item 'hearted' increases the likelihood of seeing something more than once.

I used to think that Favorites on Etsy were sort of a 'feel good' feature. It was nice to check your hearts and see that people liked your stuff, but basically it had no real useful function. Now I see that it can be a helpful promotional tool to remind people - that already are inclined to purchase from you that you - about your store. Sehr wichtig!

Tutorial: Turning Gutter Outlets into Busts

Contributed by Eva of Zafran

I do love hardware stores! If you're looking for true design, go there. Me, I was tinkering with all sorts of materials to create a cool presentation for my chokers. But it didn't result in anything useful. And then I went to the hardware store.

Bring alles in Deinen – gut belüfteten - Bastelkeller.

Are you a jewelry designer looking for an original and yet low-priced bust? Or have you simply got tons of necklaces, but no rack?
Then visit your next hardware store and ask for a running outlet in the rain drain department. Heading for the cashpoint get some spray paint in your favourite colour. Bring everything back to your – well vented – studio or rather install some work place on the balcony/ in the garden.

Material

  • Running outlets and spray paint. It takes about one can per bust.

  • For covering a large area of the workspace use plastic bags rather than old newspapers. Paper tends to jam with fresh paint.

  • Sandpaper, some soft cloth.

  • If you like to decorate the bust with some pattern, you'll need flexible and not too thick cardboard, scissors plus some paper clips.

  • A big piece of white paper.

  • Breathing protection

Vorbereitung/ Preparation

Wirklich.

The running outlet must be free from dust and grease before spraypaninting. Just wash it with hot water.
I recommend grinding before painting. It makes the paint more durable later on. Remove grinding dust with a soft cloth. Spraypaint can make a remarkable mess. So you might want to cover a large area of your workspace. You'll be working about half an hour on each bust. So use a breath protection. Really!

Generell/ In General

To top-dress the material it takes at least two coatings. Check out the recommended drying time written on the can. It may vary depending on the spraypaint you are using.

Schritt 1/ Step 1

Also: innen beginnen.

First work the inside of the running outlet. For doing this you have to put it down and tilt it over. If the outer surface was already painted you would damage the paint. So start with the inner surface. And don't forget to spray the base, too! Let dry and then add another coating or maybe two.

Schritt 2/ Step 2

Now place the running outlet on it's base again. Take special care of creases and rills. Do not wipe off running paint. Let it dry and remove it by grinding. Then add another coating or maybe two.
Maybe you are already satisfied with the bust the way it is. Then you're done now. But if you wish to add some decorating elements, continue with...

Schritt 3/ Step 3

Gratuliere! Nun bist Du definitiv fertig!

Do you want your bust to show some decollete or a certain pattern? Than it's time to use the flexible and not too thick cardboard for making a stencil. Put the big piece of white paper up against a wall und do some test spraying. Check out the stencils effect and the best spraying distance and intensity. If necessary you can optimize your stencil.
Once you are satisfied with the result mount the stencil onto the bust using paper clips. If you happen to make a mistake you can still correct it with the basic paint. But be careful and spray lightly from a larger distance. Congratulations! Now you are definetily done.

Tipp/ Hint

Save left over paint for later corrections. The painting might get damaged due to transportationt. To prevent this always wrap some cloth around the bust.

Was sonst noch geht/ Anything goes, well almost

Of course not only chokers can be arranged on this bust, it is also suitable for the presentation of necklaces. Though this bust has no shoulders as they usually have it's possible to drape various kinds of necklaces.
